Labor Pains - Starting a Medical Billing or Medical Transcription Business
QUESTION: I have a seven month old baby and have worked as an Executive Assistant for 10 years. I have recently started contemplating ideas for a home based business. I am wondering about the medical billing or medical transcription fields as opportunities to work from home. ANSWER: Medical transcription - the process of creating hard copy medical records from audio tapes dictated by doctors and other healthcare providers - is a very popular home business choice, but caution is advisable. There are many advertised programs that claim that there is no experience necessary to enter medical transcription, and that high income can be expected with minimal education. This is unrealistic. Aspiring medical transcriptionists should know that a certificate granted upon completion of an educational course is not a recognized professional credential. The only way to become a certified medical transcriptionist (CMT) is by successfully completing both parts of the examination administered by the Medical Transcriptionist Certification Program (MTCP) at the American Association for Medical Transcription.
Medical coding is a newer but related profession that does not require quite as much knowledge of medical terminology. Coders are important because each health care treatment involves 1. a diagnosis of the patient's problem and 2. a treatment to try to fix the problem. To arrive at a diagnosis such things as lab tests, scans, and x-rays are necessary. Treatment involves hospitalization, doctor visits, prescription drugs, surgery, therapy or other options. In order to accurately pay doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, labs, ambulance companies and the myriad of other health care providers, it is necessary for each element of the diagnosis and each part of the treatment to be assigned a specific multi-digit code chosen from an extensive system of codes standardized by the health care industry. The person selecting the code for each step is the "coder" whose accuracy and conscientious.
