Labor Pains - Improving Hits to Your Site
QUESTION: Hello, I'm so thrilled to find your site! My question is in regard to marketing on the web. My web site has been up and running for about 8 months and would like advice on targeting customers. I understand the process of submitting the site to search engines. I'm also familiar with the importance of meta tags or keywords. Is this the area I should only be concentrating in primarily? I've been taking these steps to the best of my ability but would like to know the most cost effective and creative way to get the word out. I sell Christening gowns, dresses & rompers but feel that my traffic is still VERY low to what it could potentially be. Since the business is new, I don't have vast amounts of financial resources so would like to know what I (personally) could do to improve the numbers without hiring a specialist. Please advise. ANSWER: There is some very good news for you and everyone else who is interested in creating more traffic to their Web site. Web site marketing is not an exact science, and no one is an expert - yet. However, some successful techniques have been identified and more are being discovered and devised every day. We can't go into detail here, but we can help you understand the process.
Most Web site owners make two big mistakes:
- They treat their site like an electronic brochure. If you want to create new traffic and repeat visitors, you must offer more than just your products. Site content can include articles that are of interest to your target audience and related to your products or service. If you don't feel confident writing the content yourself, you can find writers who are willing to trade their writing skills for publicity opportunities. Having content on your site will also give you more key words for the search engines to indentify. Another way to increase content is to have a link section. Approach owners of sites with related content and offer to trade links. This will give your site publicity and could attract your target audience back for a second look. - They ignore traditional marketing techniques. If your site gets publicity in print publications, you will attract a large number of people. Send press releases to magazines and newspapers that give your site a newsworthy spin. Offer something free or write about the things that make your site special.
E-zines like this one are another important source of publicity and marketing. There are thousands of e-zines and many are sent to members of your target audience. If you can write, submit articles and in lieu of pay ask for a mention of your Web site and a link at the end of the article. You should also offer your own free e-zine which will help you develop an e-mail list of your most interested visitors. When they subscribe to your newsletter, you will be providing a service to them, but you will gain too. Each time your e-zine is delivered, it will remind your target audience to visit your site. It will also give you an opportunity to gently remind them of what you have to offer.
Don't forget networking. Participate in message boards and chats that are used by the members of your target audience. You can offer information in your area of expertise and that will attract visitors to your site.
