Labor Pains - Starting a Word Processing Business
QUESTION: I was a secretary up until 4 years ago when I had my first child. Now I also have an eight month old. I am interested in starting up some sort of secretarial/word processing/resume business but I’m just not sure how to start it. Please help. From: Marlene Rvog@webspan.net
ANSWER: Because you will be bringing home skills learned in the workplace, you will have the opportunity to join many other moms who have successfully used this technique. Secretarial/word processing/resume businesses have a high rate of success. And the best news is that there are two wonderful books available that can give you the exact help you need. Both are written by Jan Melnik of Durham, Connecticut.
There was a time when Jan felt as unsure as you do. She wanted to leave the corporate rat-race to work at home. She started by typing term papers for college students then expanded to include resumes, brochres, copyediting, desktop publishing and other services. She found her first clients by posting notices on college and supermarket bulletin boards, but it was her listing in the Yellow Pages that really made her telephone start to ring. She is now listed under several different headings.
Jan had three sons - including identical twins - while her business grew. When she designed an office addition to her home, she did not include a door because she wanted her business to blend with her household and for her children to feel welcome. She has been very successful in meeting this goal. Today, Jan is a certified professional resume writer, and she continues to operate her own home-based business, Absolute Advantage. She provides secretarial services, office support assistance, resume and career search materials/services, editorial assistance, desktop publishing, and business consulting to a wide range of clients.
Drawing from her more than 15 years of firsthand experience and detailed recommendations of 20 home-based secretarial service owners from around the country, Jan wrote How To Start a Home-Based Secretarial Services Business (Globe Pequot Press). She covers the basics: Setting up an office, advertising, handling zoning matters, attracting clients, retaining a loyal client base, and pricing services profitably.
In How to Start a Home-Based Resume Business, Jan shows you how to get into one of the fastest-growing service businesses. She covers how to start up with minimal expense, how to conduct a consultation and write a resume, and how to build your client base and develop referrals. Twenty-five resume writers (all home-based) from around the country are profiled and provide their how-to advice.
Mothers' Home Business Network highly recommends each of these definitive guides. To get more information or place a credit card order, call (860) 349-0256 or e-mail Jan at CompSPJan.
