Where would you like to go? Labor Pains - How to Make Money From Your Experience
QUESTION: My husband and I are ready to start our family. I have found that the computer industry (Networking Administration in particular) is not family-friendly in any way. I so not necessarily want to start my own business, but I would like a job that is fairly low stress, family friendly, and has the potential to allow me to work in the office part time and at home part time.
However, I have spent the last 10 years as a PC/Network administrator and don't really know what other kinds of jobs (home or otherwise) are out there. I do not have any experience in Web Design and am not sure that is the direction I want to go. Cristy - (cflahert@regis.edu)
ANSWER: Dear Cristy, Wow, with 10 years of experience in PC/Network Administration you must really know your stuff.
Consider making your knowledge available to others. Consulting would be a great place to start. There are many small companies just starting out that may have a network but have no one to administer it. You could do this part-time for local companies and yes, you could even make a living doing it online.
Check out our Job Finder. Almost all the companies there can list your services and make them available to the employers who register with them. Specifically we recommend eLance.
Try checking with local places like hospitals, libraries and non-profit organizations. They may all require services that you could provide on a part-time basis.
Consider giving classes in networking at you local community college. I personally know two people that do this and they earn a great income from it and only work a few nights a week.
Or, set up one-on-one classes for people looking to learn how to become a network administrator.
You might consider writing short technical manuals or reports and make them available online through services like ClickBank.
