Where would you like to go? Labor Pains - Telecommuting Jobs
QUESTION: I have ten years of experience as a legal secretary and have been wanting to assist with overflow work for legal firms on a part-time basis. I would, however, prefer to do this at-home since I am the mother of two; one child is at home and the other in school. Every time I come across working at home possibilities, they want me to pay a fee. I would like to know if there are any companies out there that will hire me, based on my resume and qualifications, to work for them telecommuting? It just doesn't seem like it is possible!
ANSWER: Yes, it is very difficult to get hired for a telecommuting job. Most telecommuters are employees of a company who have proven their worth and then move on to telecommuting. You do have options for finding the type of work you describe. If you are willing, you can get hired by a company that has a track record for allowing telecommuting and put in your time in-house. For a list of some of the larger companies with telecommuting programs, go to June Langhoff's Telecommuting Resource Center's Telework-friendly companies... A to Z. Or, you can look for small companies that provide word processing and other services for local legal firms. They might have an overflow of work and would be willing to use at-home workers due to lack of space on-site. There are many firms that do a lot of project-oriented work such as consulting or public relations firms. Some post short-term telecommuting jobs that you will find listed in our Telecommuting and Freelance Job Finder.
